Optic nerve transection and intraocular pressure response to various drugs.

چکیده
Base-line intraocular pressure was similar in the rabbit eye ivith a transected optic nerve and the opposite eye subjected to a sham operation. Hyperosmotic oral ethanol, at doses of 1.5 to 2.0 ml. per kilogram, lowered intraoctdar pressure significantly less in eyes with transected optic nerves than in their fellow eyes with intact optic nerves. Smaller doses of ethanol (0.75 ml. per kilogram) decreased intraocular pressure only in sham-operated eyes. Topically applied pilocarpine or epinephrine hydrochloride produced no difference between the intraocular pressures of the two eyes. Intravenous acetazolamide lowered intraocidar pressure symmetrically in eyes with both intact and transected optic nerves.

Changes in mRNA levels of the Myoc/Tigr gene in the rat eye after experimental elevation of intraocular pressure or optic nerve transection.
PURPOSE To isolate the rat Myoc/Tigr gene and investigate changes in its expression pattern in normal eyes and in eyes with either pressure-induced optic nerve damage or optic nerve transection. METHODS Expression pattern of the rat Myoc/Tigr gene was investigated by Northern blot hybridization. Optic nerve damage and death of ganglion cells in the retina were induced unilaterally, by injecti...
متن کاملRetinal glutamate transporter changes in experimental glaucoma and after optic nerve transection in the rat.
PURPOSE High levels of glutamate can be toxic to retinal ganglion cells. Effective buffering of extracellular glutamate by retinal glutamate transporters is therefore important. This study was conducted to investigate whether glutamate transporter changes occur with two models of optic nerve injury in the rat. METHODS Glaucoma was induced in one eye of 35 adult Wistar rats by translimbal diod...
متن کاملIncreased elastin expression in astrocytes of the lamina cribrosa in response to elevated intraocular pressure.
PURPOSE To determine whether abnormal elastin synthesis in the glaucomatous optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa is due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) or secondary to axonal injury, monkeys with elevated IOP and with optic nerve transection were compared. METHODS Unilateral, chronic elevated IOP was induced in 11 rhesus monkeys by laser scarification of the trabecular meshwork. IOP wa...
متن کاملP129: Use of Stem Cells to Regenerate Degenerative Optic Nerve
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to convert to different types of cells and after dividing, they can produce their own cells or other cells. Axons of the retinal ganglion cells, from the optic nerve. These cells lose the ability to regenerate themselves before birth. Optic nerve degeneration can result from various causes including increased intraocular pressure, comp...
متن کاملGlobal changes in optic nerve head gene expression after exposure to elevated intraocular pressure in a rat glaucoma model.
PURPOSE In glaucoma, the optic nerve head (ONH) is the likely site of initial injury and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the best-known risk factor. This study determines global gene expression changes in the pressure-injured ONH. METHODS Unilateral sustained IOP elevation (glaucoma, n = 46) or optic nerve transection (n = 10) was produced in rats. ONHs were removed, and the retrobulba...
